The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>most<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>significant producer\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>counterfeit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>items is from China, then comes Philippines, Thailand, India Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Kenya.<\/p>\n Each year countries trade goods worth trillions\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>dollars\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>aspirin to zucchini.\u00a0 According to global customs data collected and analyzed by\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>OECD and\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>E-use intellectual property office,\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>imports entering countries by air, ship, road or rail, 2.5%\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>counterfeit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>or pirated goods.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n For\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>European Union, 5%\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all imports\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fake. OECD analysis estimates that\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>global trade and\u00a0<\/span>counterfeit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and pirated\u00a0<\/span>products<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is worth $461 billion a year around\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>same as\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>illicit drug trade and is rising.<\/p>\n This estimate,\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>most<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>rigorous to date is based on some half a million custom seizures around\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>world between 2010 and 2013 as a conservative figure as it excludes online piracy.\u00a0<\/span>The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>profits often go to organized crime.<\/p>\n The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fake goods have made its way to every sector,\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>luxury handbags, watches, and perfumes to machine parts and chemicals. Customs officials have even found\u00a0<\/span>counterfeit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>bananas and strawberries that infringe trade-marks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Most<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>seriously fake medicines that slip past customs threaten\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>health and safety\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>those who use them unknowingly.\u00a0<\/span>Counterfeit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>trade means lost company revenues and lower taxes for governments. It hurts society, and it discourages firms\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>doing costly but essential research into new\u00a0<\/span>products<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>or medicines.<\/p>\n Most<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>counterfeit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>goods\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>made in middle income and emerging economies with China in\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>first place. These countries have\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>infrastructure for large-scale trade, but many lack\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>institutions and legislation needed to crack down on\u00a0<\/span>counterfeit<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>trafficking.<\/p>\n Electronics and electrical equipment\u00a0<\/span>are faked mostly. Next comes jeweler about 30% , optical, photographic and medical equipment amounting to 21%, pharma 11%, footwear 9%, clothing and textile 20% , toys 75, food 8%, leather goods 6%, perfumes 3%. Tougher regulations and closer international cooperation can help stem\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>flow\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fakes.<\/p>\n
