OECD analysis estimates that<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>global trade and<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>counterfeit<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>and pirated<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>products<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>is worth $461 billion a year around<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>same as<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>illicit drug trade and is rising.<\/p>\n<p>This estimate,<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>most<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>rigorous to date is based on some half a million custom seizures around<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>world between 2010 and 2013 as a conservative figure as it excludes online piracy.<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>The<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>profits often go to organized crime.<\/p>\n<p><span>The<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>fake goods have made its way to every sector,<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>from<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>luxury handbags, watches, and perfumes to machine parts and chemicals. Customs officials have even found<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>counterfeit<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>bananas and strawberries that infringe trade-marks.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Most<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>seriously fake medicines that slip past customs threaten<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>health and safety<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>of<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>those who use them unknowingly.<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Counterfeit<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>trade means lost company revenues and lower taxes for governments. It hurts society, and it discourages firms<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>from<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>doing costly but essential research into new<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>products<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>or medicines.<\/p>\n<p><span>Most<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>counterfeit<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>goods<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>are<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>made in middle income and emerging economies with China in<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>first place. These countries have<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>infrastructure for large-scale trade, but many lack<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>institutions and legislation needed to crack down on<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>counterfeit<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Electronics and electrical equipment<span>\u00a0<\/span>are faked mostly. Next comes jeweler about 30% , optical, photographic and medical equipment amounting to 21%, pharma 11%, footwear 9%, clothing and textile 20% , toys 75, food 8%, leather goods 6%, perfumes 3%.
